Late summer in Lapland

A week between the Midnight Sun and autumn colours. Small group. Personally hosted.
29 August to 05 September 2026

Personally hosted small-group journey in Lapland

Late summer in Lapland is a time when the season begins to turn. The evenings grow quieter, the first birch leaves take on shades of yellow, and a particular stillness settles over the fells.

During this personally hosted small-group journey, we discover Lapland through encounters rather than a checklist of sights. Through local people, stories, campfires and landscapes that shape the rhythm of life in the North.

Together, we visit sacred Sámi sites, walk through open fell landscapes and meet reindeer herders and local craftspeople. We enjoy regional food around the fire and make space for the things that often get lost in everyday life: nature, stillness and meaningful conversations.

A week in Ylläs for those who want to do more than simply see Lapland — they want to understand it.

Who this late summer in Lapland journey is for

This Late summer in Lapland journey is for travelers who would rather get to know one place properly than rush through a long list of attractions.

It is designed for curious people who enjoy being outdoors, discovering local culture and sharing unhurried moments with others. For those who would rather sit beside a campfire than stand in a queue and who want to experience a quieter, more personal side of Lapland beyond the familiar postcard images.

You do not need to be an experienced hiker. The walks are easy to moderate and taken at a relaxed pace. Openness, curiosity and a willingness to settle into the rhythm of the North matter far more than physical performance.

Many guests join on their own, while others travel as a couple or with a friend. What brings everyone together is the wish to experience Lapland in a small group, with enough space for conversation, reflection and peaceful moments in nature.

This journey could be right for you if you…

  • prefer traveling with 4–6 people rather than a large tour group
  • enjoy meeting local people and hearing their stories
  • value nature, good food and meaningful encounters
  • are curious about Lapland’s culture and way of life
  • enjoy walking without needing to cover long distances
  • want a journey that slows you down rather than keeps you constantly busy

This journey may not be right for you if you…

  • want to fit as many activities as possible into each day
  • prefer a tightly scheduled itinerary from morning until evening
  • are looking for conventional five-star luxury
  • would rather travel entirely independently than share the week with a small group

By the end of this Late summer in Lapland journey, you will not have seen everything the region has to offer.

But you may understand why so many people return to the North again and again.

Places filled with stories

Day 2

Our first journey takes us to places connected to Sámi history and traditions. Surrounded by lakes, rocks and fells, we explore old stories, beliefs and the close relationship between people and the landscape.

In some places, even the silence seems to have a story to tell.

National park & campfire cooking

Day 3

At the Kellokas Visitor Centre, we learn about the nature and history of Pallas–Yllästunturi National Park before following the trail through Varkaankuru.

In the early evening, we gather again in the lavvo to enjoy one of Lapland’s simplest and most comforting traditions: pancakes cooked over an open fire.

The scent of freshly cooked pancakes mingles with woodsmoke and the fragrance of the pine forest.

Walking with reindeer

Day 4

Walking through the forest alongside reindeer offers a new perspective on Lapland. The animals set the pace while we learn more about reindeer herding and its importance to life in the North.

Sometimes the quiet sound of reindeer hooves on soft ground is enough to make the rest of the world disappear.

A piece of Lapland to take home

Day 5

In the workshop of a local artisan, traditional materials are transformed into a personal keepsake that will continue to remind you of the North long after the journey ends.

The afternoon is deliberately left free, giving you time to rest, explore the village or simply enjoy the quiet surroundings.

Among reindeer antler, silver and well-used tools, something much more personal than a souvenir begins to take shape.

From the top, it is easy to understand why so many people feel drawn back to Lapland.

Northern herbs, Sauna & Finnish traditions

Day 7

Lapland’s plants have supported everyday life in the North for generations. After a workshop exploring local herbs and natural products, we end the week with a traditional Finnish sauna and a farewell dinner together.

Warm wood, still water and the gentle heat of the sauna bring the week to a peaceful close.

Day 8

After breakfast, our late summer in Lapland journey comes to an end. Many guests leave with more than photographs: new perspectives, personal encounters and memories of a region they have experienced rather than simply visited.

The fells remain behind, but their stories travel home with you.

A different kind of late summer in Lapland journey

No checklist. No rush. No big tour bus.

✓ Small group instead of a large coach tour
✓ Encounters with people who live here
✓ Personally hosted throughout the week
✓ Lapland between summer and autumn
✓ A thoughtful journey at an unhurried pace

More than a sightseeing checklist

Many journeys are built around fitting in as many activities, photographs and famous sights as possible.

This week follows a different rhythm. We make time for landscapes, conversations and encounters — including the unplanned moments that often become the strongest memories.

Meet the people who live here

Lapland is more than fells, reindeer and Northern Lights.

Throughout the week, we meet local people who share their knowledge, stories and perspectives on life in the North. These are the kinds of encounters you will not find in an ordinary guidebook.

Lapland between summer and autumn

Late August reveals a side of Lapland that many visitors never experience.

The days are still long, but darkness slowly returns. The first birch leaves begin to turn yellow, the air grows cooler and the evening light becomes softer. It is also the beginning of the Northern Lights season.

A small group, never a crowd

The group is limited to just six guests.

This creates a relaxed atmosphere and allows the itinerary to remain flexible, with space for questions, spontaneous stops and individual interests. No one disappears into the crowd.

Personally hosted from start to finish

I host the entire journey myself.

As your guide and a long-term resident of Ylläs, I share not only my knowledge of the region but also the smaller stories of everyday life that many visitors would otherwise never hear.

Travel with curiosity, not urgency

This journey is for people who would rather immerse themselves than rush from one activity to the next.

For travellers who are curious about nature and culture, enjoy spending time outdoors and want to understand Lapland rather than simply pass through it.

Loimu Resort is a small, family-run hotel on the shores of Lake Ylläsjärvi in Finnish Lapland. With only seven rooms, it offers a peaceful and personal atmosphere away from larger resort hotels.

The rooms were renovated when the resort opened in summer 2025. Each has a private bathroom and facilities for making tea and coffee.

The resort also has a small restaurant serving locally inspired food, together with a relaxed café and bar area for quiet evenings after a day outdoors.

Meet your host

Several years ago, I came to Lapland and stayed. It was not because of one particular sight or experience, but because of the way life feels here: the openness of the landscape, the quiet between the seasons and the people who have found their own rhythm in the North.

Today, I live in Ylläsjärvi and welcome guests from around the world to the region I now call home. What interests me most is not only Lapland’s famous sights, but the stories behind them: conversations around the fire, small encounters and the people who continue to share their knowledge and traditions.

Why I created Boutique Journeys

Boutique Journeys grew from the idea that travel should leave space for genuine encounters.

I wanted to create journeys without large groups, rushed itineraries or the feeling of moving from one attraction to the next. Instead, we spend time outdoors, meet people from the region and discover Lapland in a more personal way.

If you are curious about the North and enjoy traveling with an open mind, I would love to share this late summer in Lapland journey with you.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be?

The walks are easy to moderate and taken at a relaxed pace. The longest routes are approximately 4–8 kilometres, sometimes across uneven natural terrain. You do not need to be an experienced hiker, but you should be comfortable walking outdoors for a few hours.

Absolutely. Solo travelers are very welcome, and many guests join Boutique Journeys alone. The program price is per person, while accommodation is priced per room.

The journey is limited to 4–6 guests. This keeps the atmosphere personal and allows time for individual interests, questions and spontaneous stops.

Yes. By late August, the nights are dark enough for the Northern Lights to become visible again. However, aurora sightings always depend on solar activity, cloud cover and local weather, so they can never be guaranteed.

Yes. Loimu Resort is located beside Lake Ylläsjärvi, away from strong city lights, so it may be possible to see the Northern Lights close to the hotel when conditions are favourable.

The easiest option is to fly to Kittilä Airport, usually via Helsinki. You can also arrive through Rovaniemi Airport. Airport transfers on the official arrival and departure days are included in the journey price.

Rooms are reserved for the group at Loimu Resort,  a small lakeside hotel in Ylläsjärvi. Accommodation is booked separately and paid directly to the hotel, and I will help coordinate the reservation.

The main language of the journey is English or German.
