An honest local guide

Do I need a car in Ylläs?

Do I need a car in Ylläs?

One of the most common questions I get from visitors is:

“Do I need a car in Ylläs?”

The short answer is:

No. But it depends on when you visit and how you like to travel.

Many visitors are surprised to learn that you can absolutely enjoy a Lapland holiday without a car. At the same time, there are situations where having your own vehicle makes exploring the region much easier.

As someone who lives in Ylläs and regularly guides visitors, I’d like to give you an honest overview of when a rental car is worth it and when you can comfortably leave the driving to someone else.

Ylläs Is bigger than many people expect

Many first-time visitors imagine Ylläs as a small village where everything is within walking distance.

In reality, Ylläs consists of two villages: Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi. They are located about 11 kilometres apart on opposite sides of the fell.

Beyond the villages, you’ll find a vast network of hiking trails, wilderness huts, viewpoints, campfire sites and nature attractions spread across the region. Places like Pakasaivo, Äkäsaivo and many trailheads are located outside the villages and can be more difficult to reach without your own transportation.

Whether you need a car depends not only on the season, but also on the type of holiday you’re planning.

Do I need a car in Ylläs during winter?

For most winter visitors: no

If you’re visiting Ylläs in winter, you probably won’t need a rental car.

A ski bus connects the main locations around Ylläs, including Äkäslompolo, Ylläsjärvi and the ski resort. Many hotels offer airport transfers or help arrange transportation. In addition, many winter activities include pick-up and drop-off services.

These often include:

  • Husky safaris
  • Reindeer experiences
  • Snowmobile tours
  • Northern lights excursions
  • Guided snowshoe hikes

If your holiday mainly consists of organised activities, you can comfortably manage without a car.

My experience with guests

Most of my winter guests arrive without a rental car and never miss having one.

Many are actually relieved not to deal with snowy roads, icy parking areas or unfamiliar winter driving conditions. Instead, they can focus on enjoying their holiday and simply relax after each activity.

Especially if this is your first trip to Lapland, travelling without a car can be a surprisingly stress-free option.

When a rental car can still be useful in winter

There are situations where having a car makes sense.

A rental car can be particularly useful if you are:

  • a photographer chasing northern lights
  • staying for more than a week
  • planning day trips around Lapland
  • a cross-country skier wanting to explore different trail networks
  • someone who enjoys traveling independently

For visitors who value flexibility, a rental car offers complete freedom.

Do I need a car in Ylläs during summer or autumn?

The answer is more often yes

Summer and autumn are a little different.

The ski bus does not operate, organised transfers are less common and many hiking areas are spread across a wider region.

If you plan to visit multiple hiking areas or explore beyond the villages, a rental car can make your trip significantly easier.

A car is especially useful for visiting:

  • Sacred Sami sites
  • Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park
  • remote trailheads and campfire sites

An alternative to a rental car: e-fatbikes

Not everyone wants to drive while on holiday.

Fortunately, Ylläs has another excellent option: e-fatbikes.

These electric bikes allow you to cover surprisingly long distances and are perfect for exploring the extensive gravel roads and trail network around Ylläs.

For active travelers, an e-fatbike can be a fantastic way to combine freedom, exercise and nature without needing a car.

How do you get from Kittilä Airport to Ylläs?

Most visitors arrive via Kittilä Airport.

Depending on where you’re staying, Ylläs is about 35 to 40 kilometres away.

Your options include:

Airport Bus

During the winter season, buses are often scheduled to match incoming flights.

Transfer Services

Many hotels and activity providers offer transfers.

Taxi

The most convenient option, but also the most expensive.

Rental Car

Several major rental car companies operate directly at Kittilä Airport. Book early, because they are limited.

What kind of traveler are you?

You probably don’t need a car if…

  • this is your first trip to Lapland
  • you mainly book organised activities
  • you’re staying for 3 to 5 days
  • you want a relaxed holiday

A rental car may be worth it if…

  • you’re a photographer
  • you enjoy independent travel
  • you plan several hikes
  • you’re staying longer than a week
  • you want to explore different parts of Lapland

By the way, I offer experiences packages with transfers to all experiences included.

My personal recommendation

If you’re visiting Ylläs for the first time in winter and mainly plan to join organised activities, I would skip the rental car.

You’ll save money, avoid winter driving and enjoy a more relaxed holiday.

However, if you love photography, hiking or exploring independently, a rental car can be a worthwhile investment.

The good news?

Ylläs is a wonderful destination both with and without a car.
